Miss Bohemia Halloween Giveaway & Free Tutorial

As we now move into Autumn, one of my favourite times of the year is just around the corner! That's right, in no time at all Halloween will be creeping up upon us!  Whether your celebrations are more traditional or more fun based, there's no doubt that this is a magical time of the year!

From now up until Halloween, I will be running a series of fun tutorials, giveaways and features on my blog which I invite you to be part of :-)

To kick off the celebrations, I have a fun pumpkin tutorial to share with you. This cute little decoration is an easy to make fun project which requires a few resources and some of which you may already have!  I also have an exciting Halloween Crafty giveaway too!

Mini Felt Pumpkin Decoration Tutorial

Please read the notes at the end of the tutorial before beginning.

You will need

* Felt in orange and black
* Embroidery thread in orange and black
* Needle
* Pins
* Scissors
* Filling(cotton or polyester)

Optional:
* Ribbon (if you want to hang your decoration)
* Buttons and any additional embellishments

Instructions

Step 1 Using the template provided, cut out the paper patterns. Pin the templates to the felt and carefully cut out the shapes. For the smaller pieces, you may find it easier to draw or trace the shapes directly on to the felt and then cut them out.

Step 2 Position the eyes on top of one of the main pumpkin shapes and pin (or glue) in place.  Stitch around the edge of each eye.  I used blanket stitch but you can also use running, slip or back stitch etc. Repeat the above steps with the nose and mouth pieces.

Step 3 Fold the ribbon in half with the wrong sides facing.  Cross the ends over and pin in place.  Fold the lower edge over and secure with a few small stitches (this is to prevent the edges from fraying).

Step 4 Place the ribbon at the back of the pumpkin face and pin in place.

Step 5 Position the pumpkin face on top of the additional orange piece and pin together.  Begin the final steps by adding a blanket stitch around the edge of the 2 pieces and leave a 1 inch gap.

Step 6 Add the filling then continue to blanket stitch around the border ending with a knot at the back.

Please feel free to use the tutorial pattern and template below for your crafting projects.

I hope you have fun creating your own pumpkin decorations :-)

(Copyright for this pattern and template remains with the owner Jen Neil)

Notes:
*The pumpkin decoration I made measures 8cm in diameter. You may need to resize the image template above but you can also make the pumpkin bigger or smaller.
*Fabric glue can be used (instead of pinning) for the smaller pieces.  You can also glue the features on the pumpkin if you prefer.

There are so many things you can make and do with felt and I will be sharing some more tutorials with you :-)  For your own projects you can purchase felt at most craft shops and the ribbon I used can be found is from Printed OnRibbon.  I picked out the Halloween quotes I wanted and chose black text on orange for the design.

Popular Crafts Magazine Feature - Tea Dyed Gift Tag Tutorial

Popular Crafts Magazine Feature

*Tea Dyed Gift Tag Tutorial*

Some exciting news to share with you today!  My tea dyed gift tags have been featured in Popular Crafts Magazine October/November 2012 along with my written tutorial.  One of the tags is featured on the cover (shown above) and you can also see them in the contents and feature pages below :-)

For the tutorial I made 3 hand dyed tags including an Alice In Wonderland 'Drink Me' tag and one with a vintage butterfly theme!

These days I usually make old fashioned looking tags with my nifty crafty tools, inks and blenders.  I have distressed inks ranging from old sepia tones to faded blues and pinks and I love the results I get with them!  Before I used these modern methods I would create old fashioned labels and tags with a tea dyed solution.  In fact I still do occasionally, especially when I want to dye lace and muslin.  It's such a great way to create the perfect old fashioned look!

You can see the full tutorial in the latest edition of Popular Crafts which is on sale right now!  There is also lots of other wonderful projects and valuable craft information and tips in this latest issue.

I would like to say a special 'thank you' to Katharine Jewitt and Popular Crafts!

Until next time...

Jen :-)
